The body with Cherish Menzo: fictitious, speculative, hypothetical – a galaxy unto itself, in full acceleration. Together with her performance partner Camilo Mejía Cortés, she starts searching for an opportunity to rid her body of fixed, permanent ascriptions, to disengage it from the reality in which she moves. Within the framework of SPIELART on October 31 and November 1 at Muffathalle
Her gaze, therefore, goes up to the stars. In space, between colliding black holes, they both find what they seek: Inspired by posthumanism and Afrofuturism they bear a new, enigmatic anti-body in the dark matter. As in her previous piece JEZEBEL, Cherish Menzo employs a procedure taken from hip hop music: The so-called chopped and screwd method, originally a remix technique that massively reduces the music’s speed, is transferred onto the performers’ movements. In their drastic retardation, a simultaneous sense of time dilatation is accomplished, allowing for new interpretational approaches. An (Afro)futurist manifest, a danced remix.
BIOGRAPHY
In her choreographies, performance artist Cherish Menzo seeks out forms of movement and being that posit beauty and grotesqueness alongside each other, as equals. She consciously probes for a disassociating effect therein, leading away from the known and familiar. Together with Femke Gyselinck, Jan Martens, and Steven Michel, she manages dance organisation GRIP in Antwerp.
Cherish Menzo lives in Brussels and Amsterdam.
