Léonard Engel
Performer, Dance Artist
Born in France, Léonard Engel is a performer and dance maker living in Berlin and Munich.
After graduating from the Paris Opera Ballet School, he earned his first engagement with the Victor Ullate Ballet in Madrid before spending eight years as a soloist under the direction of Ivan Liska at the Bavarian State Ballet in Munich, where he served the classical ballet genre but also performed in works by Pina Bausch, Aszure Barton, Russell Maliphant, and William Forsythe.
Since 2016 he has been working as a freelance artist, deepening his contemporary, technical and choreographic knowledge by participating in workshops with Eleanor Bauer, Trajal Harrell, Noé Soulier, Vera Mantero or La Ribot. He has worked as a performer with Tanztheater Wuppertal, Pina Bausch, Richard Siegal (Munich), Paula Rosolen (Frankfurt), Billinger and Schulz (Frankfurt), theater directors Gintersdorfer / Klaßen (Berlin), Berlin video artist Christian Falsnaes and currently for Laurent Chétouane.
In 2018, Léonard Engel received a research grant from the Cultural Department of the City of Munich for his project "States of Survival", which explores strategies of imitation in the animal world. In January 2019, he premiered his first choreographic piece, the solo "Pavane," as part of the Tanztage Berlin at Sophiensæle
