Stefan Maria Marb

Dancer, Choreographer, Educator, Psychologist

Stefan Maria Marb lives in Munich and works as a dancer, choreographer, pedagogue as well as a psychologist.

He studied contemporary dance at the Dance Center Iwanson and subsequently worked for both national and international companies, such as the Ko Murobushi dance company Tokyo, at Man Act London, for Dance Energy, at TAW Vienna, at the Salzburg Festival, at the Kammerspiele Munich and for 20 years for the Opera Ballet of the Bavarian State Opera.

He was co-founder and co-director of IN_OUT, a platform for stage choreography, dance performance and workshops.

Since 1988 he has been intensively involved with Japanese Butoh dance and its representatives (Ko Murobushi,Yoshito Ohno, Carlotta Ikeda, Min Tanaka and Mitsutaka Ishi) and developed his own style. He teaches Butoh regularly in workshops and courses at home and abroad.

Marb has been active as a choreographer nationally and internationally for over 30 years.

In 1988, his solo Men of good Fortune was awarded first prize at the Choreographers' Competition in Hanover. Since then he has created a wealth of full-length dance productions and performance cycles funded by the City of Munich, including the five-part cycle HONG 32 and the three-part Prometheus. In 2004, he produced Golem Part II, which was nominated for the Slovenian Dance Prize. In 2006 he cooperated with the New York photographer Stefan Hagen and the filmmaker Sabine Scharf in his multimedia stage solo Liquid Earth. With Betweeen, Marb brought an evening-length duet to the stage in 2008 together with Slovenian choreographer Tanja Zgonc, which made guest appearances in Ljubljana and Tokyo. In 2010 he developed the site-specific choreographic project Nevada_Body in the USA and showed it as an interdisciplinary project of photo exhibition, film projection and dance performance at whiteBOX Munich. In 2016 he developed his anthology Welten.Tänzer, in which he collaborated with sculptors, with a philosopher and with horses. In 2018, with his Butohatelier, he presented the performance Pygmalion's Longing at the Munich Glyptothek in cooperation with actor Gerd Lohmeyer and musician Jost-H. Hecker. In the same year, he presented APRES- eine Verwandlung at Munich's Gasteig, a comprehensive retrospective of his complete works of the past 30 years. In 2019, he took some time off and went on a world tour. Most recently, he staged the dance performance Engel at Munich's Museum für Abgüsse.
